The District of Columbia's Only Full-day Activity Camp Exclusively For DC Children with Asthma
The DC Department of Health is sponsoring an asthma camp operated by Breathe DC at the United Medical Center Foundation in partnership with the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington during the months of July and August, 2010.
Now in its 12th year, Camp Happy Lungs is a fun, active, and educational day camp that offers the opportunity for children between the ages 8-12 to enjoy various activities including swimming, social events, and field trips while at the same time learning how to manage their asthma.
Camp Happy Lungs features a series of two-week camps from July 12 to August 27 held at the Capital View YMCA at 2118 Ridgecrest Ct., SE, Washington, DC and the Calomiris Program Center YMCA at 1906 Allison St., NE, Washington, DC. The YMCA is a perfect venue for this initiative due to their commitment to the children in these communities.
"It is exciting to be able to offer our kids who suffer from asthma the opportunity to go to camp and enjoy many of the basic fun activities most kids take for granted. Children are usually stuck inside during the summer because of their asthma but with Camp Happy Lungs, they are taught how to manage it while having fun. It is a very rewarding opportunity," said Rolando A. Andrewn, Breathe DC President.
Breathe DC's mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease in the communities affected by disparities. The organization reaches out to community residents to fight lung diseases such as, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. In addition, Breathe DC works to reduce the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, cigarette smoking, and air pollution through education, advocacy, and research.
