The Boston Celtics behind forward Paul Pierce, who has played his entire career with the Boston Celtics, scored 27 points to lead the Celtics to a 92-86 win over the defending NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers before a packed house of 18,624 at the TD Garden in Boston Sunday night. The Celtics with the win now take a 3-2 lead in this best of 7 series going back to Los Angeles.
The irony is Paul Pierce is native of Inglewood, a section of Los Angeles.
" It's going to have to happen if we're going to win the title," Pierce said at his post game conference. " I mean, that would be great. I'm not going to try to jinx it right now. We've got to win one game, that's the goal. But it would be amazing if we could get it done."
Speaking of goals, Boston coach Doc Rivers would become the third Black coach to win multiple NBA Titles. The Celtics hold the claim to fame of having the two Blacks that have done it. Bill Russell in 1968 and 1969. KC Jones the other in 1984 and 1986. The other Black coaches are Al Attles in 1975 with Golden State and Lenny Wilkins with Seattle in 1979.
Kobe Bryant was displeased with his team play. " Just man up and play. What the hell is the big deal ?" he said at his press conference. " If I have to say something to them, then we don't deserve to be champions."
" I wasn't in a personal duel," Pierce said. " I didn't notice that we were going back and forth scoring at the time. He's a tough player. He makes shots." Pierce said at his press conference.
" He's the kind of guy (Bryant) where you ride the hot hand, that's for sure," Laker coach Phil Jackson said at his press conference as Bryant scored 38 points while grabbing 4 rebounds and handing out 5 assist.
" I tried to tell them, that when he scores its only 2 points each time he scores. Its not 10," Celtic coach Doc Rivers said at his press conference." But we defended everyone else and I thought that was big."
Bryant scores 23 consecutive Laker points between the 4:23 mark of the second quarter until there was 2:16 left in the third.
The Lakers shot from the floor shot 39.7%. The Lakers shot 56.3%
The Celtics also had 7 blocked shots to help their defense. Kevin Garnett assisted Pierce with 18 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. Garnett also had 5 steals in the game. Rajon Rondo added 18 points, 8 assist, and 5 rebounds for his nights work. Ray Allen had 12 points while grabbing 3 rebounds and dishing out 2 assist. Rasheed Wallace led the bench with 5 points and 4 rebounds.
Pau Gasol was the only Laker besides Bryant to score in double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Derek Fisher finished with 9 points shooting 2-9 from the floor. Lamar Odom off the bench had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Ron Artest finished his night shooting 2-9 from the floor while scoring 7 points.
The winner of the fifth game has won the series 19 times. Games six and seven, if necessary, will be played in Los Angeles. Game six will be Tuesday.
