BIGGER, BETTER, FRESHER, AND LOCAL
United Medical Center Foundation (The Foundation) has partnered with the Ward 8 Farmer's Market Collective to bring a "Bigger, Better Fresher and Local Farmer's Market on the grounds of United Medical Center (UMC) at 1301 Southern Avenue, S.E. Washington, DC, every Tuesday, beginning June 8, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
"Our Farmer's Market will provide healthy food options for the residents of Ward 8 and nearby communities," said Calvin Smith, Chairman of the United Medical Center Foundation. From June through October, produce stands will be set up on the parking lot of UMC, offering a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers, free samples, and new recipes using fresh produce. In addition, the Farmer's Market will also include fresh herbs and live plants, teas, oils, potpourri, and honey.
The Farmer's Market at UMC is the only weekday Farmer's Market East of the River. This year, food stamps, EBT and Snap Cards will be accepted, as well as the new WIC Cash Value Checks (CVC), and other food assistance coupons such as those offered by the WIC and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
"It's important for our community to have the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of fresh local fruits and vegetables, and we are pleased to be able to facilitate the Farmer's Market where residents can enjoy natural and nutritious eating options in our own community," said Calvin Smith. Farmer's Markets are family-friendly and maintain a "junk-food free" environment.
"It is critically important to our physical health, mental clarity, and our children's performance in school, that we put the healthiest, most nutritious foods on our tables and in our stomachs," said John Gloster, President of the Ward 8 Farmers' Market Collaborative.
