Theatre Production Aims to Increase Breast Cancer Awareness

The Bowie State University Theatre in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts has several awe-inspiring performances scheduled for the year including an upcoming production, Faces: Shades of Survival, from November 11-14, 2010.

Written and directed by local playwright Odell B. Ruffin of Greenbelt, Md., the performance illustrates the struggles that women face when battling breast cancer. The play intends to inspire people to become involved in breast cancer awareness and to explain how it affects women and their loved ones.

The performances are scheduled to take place in the Samuel L. Myers Auditorium located in the Martin Luther King Jr. Communications Art Center on Bowie State's campus.

The Faces production follows four women through their journey of acknowledgement, acceptance and eventually friendship as they battle breast cancer. Each woman is unique in personality and circumstances, while examining the day-to-day effects of breast cancer on the lives of women in the African American community.

The play focuses on how the women deal with challenges in their relationships, careers, and mental and emotional health.
