Cavaliers Defeat Wizards, 107-102
Gilbert Arenas finally played his first regular season game at the Verizon Center in Northwest on Sat., Nov. 6. He joined his teammates on the bench after the players' names had been announced. However, when Arenas was about to join the game as a substitute, fans welcomed him with a rousing applause.
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Washington Wizards 107-102 and ended their losing streak against Washington at home. The Cavaliers win also stopped the Wizards from going 2-0 at the Verizon Center.
The game was closely contested as the Wizards tried to get their second win of the season. However, those wishes were dashed when Coach Flip Saunders decided to replace forward Al Thornton, who was the star player for three quarters with Arenas for most of the fourth quarter. Thornton scored 23 points and provided tremendous defense.
"I made a mistake," Saunders told Thornton and reporters after the game. "In hindsight, you wish you had Al back in the game."
"I'm still trying to get my legs under me ... there was a point in the fourth where I should have subbed myself out for Al," he said. The Wizards play the Houston Rockets on Wed. Nov. 11, followed by Charlotte on Fri., Nov. 12 at the Verizon Center at 7:00 p.m.
