As the seasons change, cruise lines offer repositioning cruises from one seasonal destination to another. These 3-43 days voyages, offered only once or twice a year, provide travelers with sensational savings and one-of-a-kind travel experiences--visiting exotic ports not ordinarily included on standard itineraries while using the cruise as a leisurely means of travel from one destination to another.
Brand-new vessels built in Europe usually sell out quickly on repositioning cruises to North America, with ship buffs vying to ensure they're booked to sail on the latest ship to hit the high seas.
Popular repositioning cruises tend to be trans-Atlantic sailings from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean in the fall and the reverse in the spring. However, there are repositioning cruises year round to various destinations.
With extra sybaritic days at sea, guests are often treated to distinguished guest lecturers who speak on subjects ranging from Egyptology to music and art and journalism. They may also partake in golf clinics, financial workshops, bridge tournaments, dancing lessons, computer courses, and much more. Some repositioning cruises are themed cruises with activities from health and fitness to wine and food to jazz and Big Bands.
Here are two examples - one in the fall and one in the spring.
*Holland America Cruise Lines. October 18-November 7, 2010. Holland America's newest ship, the Nieuw Amsterdam, is sailing on a 20-night cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ports of call: Monte Carlo, Monaco; Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy; Valencia, Cartagena, Almeria, and Cadiz in Spain; Portimao and Lisbon in Portugal; and the private island of Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.
*Celebrity Cruise Lines. April 16-April 27, 2012. Celebrity's Eclipse sets out in the opposite direction on a 13-night cruise from Miami, Florida to London (Southampton) England. Ports of call: Ponta Delgada and Lisbon in Portugal; Vigo, Spain; and Cherbourg, France.
The best way to find the repositioning cruise that is just right for you is to seek the professional counsel of a CLIA [Cruise Lines International Association] travel agent near you.
