Funeral services will be held for Apostle Betty P. Peebles on Fri., Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. Dr. Peebles was the Senior Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise, in Landover, Md. She died on Oct. 12 following the celebration of her 76th birthday on Oct. 5. (The following excerpts can be found on the church website.)
Apostle Peebles was born in Columbia Hospital for Women, Washington, D.C. Her elementary education began in the DC Public School System (a graduate of Cardozo High School); then on to Howard University where she received a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting Finance; a Masters degree in Divinity; and a Doctorate of Divinity from Wilbur Waters School of Divinity.
Apostle Peebles has served the Jericho Ministries, and the body of Christ with tremendous passion, strength and love for over 41 years. The ministry has a membership of over 15,000.
Apostle Peebles continued the vision of her late husband Bishop James R. Peebles, Sr. when he passed. The fruition of that vision includes the Main Sanctuary that seats over 10,000; the James R. Peebles, Jr. Chapel; the Jericho Administration Building; the Jericho Christian College; and the Jericho Christian Academy - that portion of the vision was paid in full in 2005. Extensions of the vision include the Jericho Business Centre, the Jericho Center of Hope, the Jericho Youth Center, and the Jericho Residences - a 270 luxury active adult community in Landover Md.
Apostle Peebles is survived by her son Elder Joel R. Peebles, Sr., who serves as Assistant Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise; and a host of other family, and friends. She adopted each and every one of her members as her children - and was affectionately referred to as "Mom Betty."
She will be greatly missed. If there had to be one thing that would most help the world to understand her legacy - it would be her statement - her message; that she was "Performing for an Audience of One" - and that One is the Lord God Almighty Himself. She was always careful to give Him credit for what she achieved in life - she ended all of her conversations with "To God Be All The Glory!
