RAMS STAY UNBEATEN WITH BIG WIN OVER BRONCOS
Kameron Smith passed for 211 yards and two touchdowns and running back Darryl Thomas rushed for a season-high 114 yards on 10 carries as Winston-Salem State went on the road for a huge 31-14 win over CIAA preseason favorite Fayetteville State.
The Rams, who improved to a conference best 5-0, dominated the defending CIAA champions on both sides of the ball, rolling up 397 yards of total offense while limiting the Broncos (1-3) to 217 in a game that will go a long way toward determining the CIAA Southern Division champion.
Winston-Salem State opened the scoring on their first possession of the game when Smith threw a 46-yard touchdown to Dominique Fitzgerald. On the drive, Fayetteville State's defense appeared to have forced the Rams into a three-and-out, but a 15-yard roughing the kicker penalty on the punt attempt gave the Rams the ball back at the FSU 46-yard line and they capitalized on the Broncos' miscue for an early 7-0 lead.
Following a Fayetteville State punt on their ensuing possession, the Rams put together a five-play, 63-yard drive that was capped by Nic Cooper's two-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 14-0 lead with 9:15 remaining in the first quarter.
On Fayetteville State's next possession, a big 63-yard pass play from quarterback Robert Benjamin (173 passing yards) to wide out B.J. Washington moved the ball down to the WSSU 21-yard line. Four plays later, tailback Richard Medlin rumbled in from two yards out to trim the lead to 14-7 with 4:46 left in the first quarter. After a scoreless defensive battle in the second quarter the Rams held a slim 14-7 lead over the Broncos at the half.
The Broncos' chances of getting back in the game all but evaporated on their first possession of the third quarter when Benjamin was intercepted by WSSU's Rashaun Jones and the ball was returned to the FSU 28-yard line. On the next play, a wide receiver option pass from Fitzgerald to Patrick Terry for a 28-yard touchdown gave the Rams a 21-7 lead at the 13:55 mark of the third quarter.
On their next possession, Landon Thayer would add a 27-yard field goal as the Rams outscored the Broncos 10-0 to lead 24-7 after three quarters.
Winston-Salem State would kill any hope of a Bronco rally when Smith threw his second touchdown of the day to Cedric Hickman for an insurmountable 31-7 lead with 13:13 left in the game. Fayetteville State would score their final touchdown of the evening when Benjamin connected with Washington (4 catches, 118 yards) on a 36-yard score for the game's final margin of 31-14.
Next week, Winston-Salem State travels to Charlotte to take on Johnson C. Smith, while Fayetteville State tries to regroup on the road against Saint Augustine's.
