OXON HILL, MD -- Walt Disney Co. has scrapped plans for a 500-room resort hotel at the National Harbor development in Prince George's County.
Disney in 2009 announced the purchase of 11 acres for the planned hotel, but a spokeswoman said the timing for the project is not right.
County officials expected the company to serve as a critical component of the sprawling retail, residential, office and hotel complex.
Jon Peterson, senior vice present of the Peterson Cos., the development's majority owner, said he's disappointed but that National Harbor will pursue other opportunities. He said the company is looking to buy the Disney land back for other opportunities.
Scott Peterson, a spokesman for County Executive Rushern Baker, said the administration remains committed to economic development opportunities
Jon Peterson, senior vice president of the Peterson Companies, said in an interview that the land "will be incorporated back into our long-term master plan for National Harbor."
Meanwhile, Baker and development officials who expressed disappointment with Disney's decision, noted other financial opportunities at National Harbor and throughout the county, which include federal offices and a Metro station.
