Last month, 300 D.C., Maryland and Virginia girls in grades 6 through 8 participated in Girls Rock: Emerging Young Leaders Empowerment Conference.
Xi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority hosted the event at Walker Jones Education Campus in Northwest as part of its community outreach and focus on youth in the metropolitan area.
The conference was held to empower young girls to become leaders of tomorrow. Workshops were presented on sexual health, social networking and financial literacy to teach participants to make smart choices. Issues addressed related to self-esteem, conflict resolution, fitness and health, and personal relationships.
Special training workshops were held for parents and guardians to advocate for improved education, health and social wellbeing of their girls.
Upon registering for the conference, the girls were asked to participate in an essay contest. The top three winners of the contest received prizes and everyone in attendance walked away with a goodie bag
