WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown have welcomed HBO Championship Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions to Washington for the first major boxing event in nearly 20 years, featuring local boxers Lamont "Havoc" Peterson, Anthony Peterson, and Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell, along with World Champion Amir "King" Khan and Timur Ibragimov.
"We want to welcome our hometown fighters, their opponents, sponsors, and fans to the District for an evening of premium boxing," said Chairman Brown. "Events such as this bring excitement to our city, and help to spur economic development and garner international attention."
On Sat., Dec. 10, "Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson," a 12-round Unified Super Lightweight World Title fight, will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The fights will be telecast live in the United States on HBO's World Championship Boxing at 9:45 p.m. ET/6:45 p.m. PT and on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Events DC, the city's entertainment, convention, sports and cultural events organization, and Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, a premiere boxing and events company based in Los Angeles, California, are responsible for bringing the fight to the District.
The main card pits native son Peterson (29-11-1) against the current World Champion Khan (26-1) for the WBA World Super Championship and IBF World Championship. The co-featured card pits another boxer from the metropolitan area, Mitchell, against Ibragimov in a 10-round heavyweight match.
"I'm delighted to welcome these internationally recognized athletes and their fans to the District of Columbia," said Mayor Gray. "I'm proud that our Convention Center is hosting this championship bout and encourage visitors to our city to enjoy all it has to offer."
"Events DC is proud to host the city's first HBO championship bout in nearly 20 years at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center," said Gregory A. O'Dell, Events DC president and chief executive officer. "With a talented lineup of local and international fighters, we look forward to a momentous night of boxing in downtown DC."
