UPPER MARLBORO, MD - Prince George's County Executive, Rushern L. Baker, III, released the following statement on the resignation announcement of Prince George's County Council Member Leslie Johnson:
"Today [July 5], Council member Leslie Johnson submitted her resignation from the County Council effective July 31st. As I mentioned last week, my thoughts and prayers go out to Council member Johnson during this difficult time in her life.
Council member Johnson has made the right decision to resign prior to her sentencing date in October. However, by waiting to the end of the month, she has effectively delayed the residents of District 6 of valuable time needed to fill the vacancy. No delay is necessary; furthermore, it is crucial that a new council member be smoothly transitioned into the office as soon as possible. Therefore, I believe that Council Member Johnson should resign immediately.
I want to ensure the residents of District 6 that their concerns and issues will be well served, advocated and protected during this transition by both the County Council and County Executive offices. It is my hope that the Special Elections for the 6th District Council seat, both primary and general, will be completed before mid October."
