Barry Appoints Staff Assistant for Education

Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry has appointed Kathleen Arnold as his new staff assistant for Education.
Arnold, who served as Secretary of the District of Columbia for three years until 1999, was an executive assistant in the Office of the Secretary for 12 years. She has strong ties to the business sector and community-at-large, and has been a dedicated and engaged parent and grandparent in her work with both the District of Columbia public and charter school systems. Her expertise involving the creation and passage of legislation was honed during her employment at the Congressional Black Caucus and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Board of Trustees office.
"Ms. Arnold will work to carry out my priorities for quality education, pro-choice and educational opportunity," Barry said. "As a native Washingtonian and experienced D.C. government employee, Ms. Arnold knows how the government really works and will be very effective meeting the needs of Ward 8 residents."
"Kathy", as she's fondly known throughout the city, attended American University and UDC. She received her Public Administrator certification from the George Washington University.
In addition to serving as Barry's liaison to the Ward 8 Education Council, Arnold's duties will put her in touch with the Office of the State Superintendent, D.C. Public Schools, Office of the Chancellor as well as other external education organizations.
