Early Voting Results in Large Turnout

The number of early votes cast in the Washington, D.C., region looks to be a good indicator of the turnout for the presidential election on Tuesday.
But Michael Fauntroy, a political analyst at George Mason University, said the large number of early voters appeared to have caught voting officials off guard.
"I went to early voting on Friday and it was clear to me that the organizers weren't prepared for the turnout . . . I ended up waiting in line," Fauntroy said.
Reports from the weekend, that drew tallies from in-person and mailed absentee voting in the District and nearby Maryland suburbs, state that nearly 1 million people have already voted for president.
According to one of the local news outlets, 430,573 people voted early in Maryland, while in Virginia, 363,225 people voted absentee either in person or by mail. In the District, 52,000 residents were counted as early voters.
"I believe that much of the turnout came from the convenience of not having to vote on a work day," said Fauntroy. "More people now know about early voting and can fit it into their schedule, making it less of problem."
According to the District Board of Elections and Ethics, there are more than 400,000 registered voters in D.C.
