Unity Health Care, Inc. (Unity) and Providence, part of the Ascension Health System, announced Tuesday that they have entered into an agreement of mutual commitment that will allow them to expand quality, affordable and convenient health care to the residents of Washington, D.C. This new partnership brings Unity, the largest Federally Qualified Health Center in the District of Columbia (serving more than 101,000 patients annually) together with Providence, a member of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic health care system in the country.

While this affiliation is not a merger and both organizations will maintain their autonomy, their common missions and values will guide their work to provide quality services to all District residents regardless of their ability to pay. The partnership expands a high-quality, cost-effective system of medical care, bringing more primary and specialty care physicians where D.C. residents want and need it – right in their neighborhood. The partnership will reduce costly, duplicative medical testing through the sharing of electronic medical records, assuring faster access to patient health information.

Additionally, it will allow both organizations to share best practices and develop joint education programs to promote new care models and chronic disease management services. Looking ahead, Unity and Providence will also have the opportunity to co-develop new sites and services based upon patient need and geographic location.

“Emergency room visits are costly, time-consuming, and oftentimes preventable,” said Amy Freeman, President and CEO of Providence. “Fortunately, regular check-ups can help manage chronic health conditions. By expanding access to Providence physicians at Unity Health Care, we can help patients to better manage their diseases, improve outcomes, and ease the financial burden on a strained health care system by reducing avoidable trips to the emergency room.”

Under this innovative partnership, additional physician specialists from Providence will be available at Unity Health Care centers throughout the District of Columbia. Although primary and specialty care services are currently offered, the specialty fields have expanded to include the following: cardiology; dermatology; endocrinology; gastroenterology; general surgery; hematology; oncology; ophthalmology; orthopedic medicine; podiatry; psychiatry; pulmonology; rheumatology; thoracic medicine; and vascular medicine. In addition, primary care services such as internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, OB/GYN medicine, oral health, senior citizen care and supportive services will continue to be available to the community at Unity health centers.

“We need to reduce the cost of health care and improve outcomes for the residents of the District of Columbia. This partnership between Unity and Providence will further both of these goals,” said Vincent A. Keane, President and CEO of Unity Health Care.
