Jan. 15: MLK's 84th Birthday

1/15/2013, 2:18 p.m.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born 84 years ago on Jan. 15, 1929.

MLK Day, which will be celebrated on Jan.21 - the same day of President Barack Obama's second inauguration -- is a federal holiday that was officially observed for the first time in 2000 in all 50 states.

King was assassinated in 1968, and a campaign began soon after to honor his legacy of nonviolent activism.

Although President Ronald Reagan signed a King holiday into law in 1983, it was first observed on January 20, 1986, with some states first resisting, giving the day alternative names or combining it with other holidays.
