Kensington Palace announced late Monday that following a 10-hour labor, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby boy, who will be heir to the royal throne.

The child, born at 4:24 British Standard Time, weighed eight pounds and six ounces, and his name will be announced at a later date. He becomes third in line to the British throne.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in the hospital overnight," said a statement from the Royal Household. "The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

As the birth was announced, a loud cheer went up from the well-wishers and media gathered outside St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where the royal couple -- William and Kate -- arrived in an unmarked car early Monday morning.

The royal baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince of Cambridge.
