Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III appointed Segun Eubanks as the new chair of the county's Board of Education.

Eubanks was sworn in Saturday at the County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro. He replaces Verjeana Jacobs, who will remain on the board.

"I am honored to serve the students, teachers, parents, and residents of Prince George's County," Eubanks said. "I have spent 30 years as a public education advocate and over a decade as a PGCPS parent. I deeply believe in Rushern Baker's commitment to the Prince George's County Public Schools."

The appointment is Baker's first move since Maryland passed a bill giving Baker more governance of the schools system, including the power to appoint appoint the board chair, the schools chief and three board members.

Baker said Eubanks "brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Board that will serve the children and families of this County well."

He also thanked the outgoing chair Jacobs for shepherding the board through "very difficult and challenging times."
