Cory Booker began his position as the latest U.S. Senator today.

Booker was sworn in at the U.S. Capitol by the president of the Senate, Vice President Joseph Biden.

Booker resigned his second term as mayor of Newark, N.J., on Oct. 30. He was elected to complete the 15 months remaining on the term of Frank Lautenberg, who died in June at 89.

Booker defeated conservative Republican Steven Lonegan in a special election. He is only the second African-American currently serving in the Senate.
