Congress has taken its annual August summer recess.

In a last-minute show of gumption, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives worked on into the night on immigration legislation which had zero (absolutely no) chance of becoming law, or in any way easing the crisis on the U.S. southern border. That’s because one day earlier, the Senate – which would have to agree to any bill before it went to the President to sign into law – had already adjourned for five weeks until after Labor Day in September.

To say that American leadership – Congress in particular – has “lost its way” is an understatement. They have fallen and cannot get up. But what’s worse is that these “leaders” actually reflect the views of their deaf, dumb, and dumber constituents.

At this time, when the wealthiest 1 percent of the U.S. population has more than the poorest 90 percent, you would think the public would be clamoring for relief. No! In fact, 97 percent of the poorest counties are in so-called “red states,” that is solid, conservative voting blocs.

To say I see the picture, nothing these “Repugnicans” say or do makes even a batwing’s worth of sense to me: not concerning immigration, and deporting indigenous children out of the land these Caucasians stole from indigenous people; not concerning voting “rights,” or as they like to characterize it “voter fraud;” not concerning school loans or education funding; nothing, nothing they say makes any sense to me.

Let’s take the education debate, for an example. This country now spends on average, about $8,000 per year, per child, educating children, and there is a big argument whenever school funding is on the public agenda. But these loony legislators are as pleased as punch when it comes time to authorize and appropriate on average $40,000 per year to house a prison inmate. That, as they say, is “counter-intuitive.”

In addition, there are so many guidelines and strings attached to education funding, related to tests and pupil outcome, they spend almost as much measuring that measly school funding as they spend on the funding itself. But there is absolutely no measurement or accountability whatsoever imposed on the prison system. Shouldn’t they be expected to make “better” inmates or something? No. The standard is, the drearier, the more miserable, the more punishing, the better.

Now, the latest GOP gimmick is to sue President Barack Obama, for not adequately enforcing provisions of the Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – which the Republican-controlled House has voted 43 times to repeal!

That’s right, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) – who spent the last two years looking over his shoulder, afraid that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) would lead a mutiny and boot him out of his leadership spot for not being conservative enough, only to watch Cantor go down to defeat against an even more recalcitrant conservative, losing a primary election and his seat in Congress – Speaker Boehner has led his majority to vote to appropriate money to take the President of the United States to court and sue him, for not enforcing a law to which he, John Boehner is fundamentally opposed.
