The executive board of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO announced Monday their support of D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser's mayoral bid.

The labor council represents 175 unions in the public, private and federal sectors, with 150,000 members in the Washington metropolitan area.

"Muriel Bowser represents the best choice for working people in D.C." Joslyn N. Williams, the organization's president, said during a joint press conference Monday with Bowser to make the announcement. "Having endorsed Muriel twice before in previous elections, labor feels that we can work productively with her. She has supported labor's positions on paid sick days for workers, increasing the minimum wage and indexing it to inflation, and free speech on picket lines."

Bowser, Ward 4 Democrat, welcomed the labor organization's support.

"I am honored to be endorsed by the hardworking men and women of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO," she said. "I look forward to working on a shared mission that supports working families, growing middle-class jobs and bringing trusted leadership to the District of Columbia. Together, we will build an even stronger and more vibrant city."
