The Washington Informer is teaming with the Washington Spirit, the District’s National Women’s Soccer League club, for a new partnership centered on community storytelling and support for Black institutions in the region.

The partnership connects one of the DMV’s longest-standing community news organizations with one of its fastest-growing professional sports teams. As part of the collaboration, The Informer will have expanded access to Spirit matches, players and events, bringing readers closer to one of the region’s most exciting teams through coverage across the newspaper’s print, digital and social platforms.

The partnership also includes a charitable component tied to a limited-edition Black History Month merchandise capsule launched by the Washington Spirit in collaboration with Rose Room Collective.

Designed by Rose Room Collective co-founder Aaron Bland, the capsule collection draws inspiration from Washington’s identity as Chocolate City and pays homage to legendary local graffiti artist Cool Disco Dan, whose iconic work remains woven into the cultural fabric of the nation’s capital.

Ten percent of all proceeds from the Washington Spirit x Rose Room Collective capsule will be donated directly to The Washington Informer to support its ongoing mission of delivering trusted local news and information to communities across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Although the capsule collection launched during Black History Month, The Washington Informer is amplifying the partnership during Women’s History Month, highlighting the leadership shaping the future of women’s sports.

The Washington Spirit are led by Michele Kang, the first woman of color to own a team in the National Women’s Soccer League and one of the most significant investors in women’s sports globally.

The partnership reflects a broader shared commitment to culture, community and representation.

“We are proud to partner with the Washington Spirit to uplift women’s sports and share stories that inspire our community,” said Denise Rolark-Barnes, publisher of The Washington Informer. “Together, we’re celebrating excellence on the field and empowering the next generation.”

Founded in 1964, The Washington Informer remains one of the nation’s oldest and most respected Black-owned community newspapers, delivering trusted reporting through its print edition, digital platforms, WIN Daily newsletter and Washington Informer Charities programming.

Readers interested in supporting the collaboration can explore the Washington Spirit x Rose Room Collective capsule collection through the Washington Spirit’s official store.
