Prince George's County is warning business owners to look out for scammers offering to perform fire inspections at a discounted rate.
Officials said the scam started Monday when a day care center operator in the county was approached by an individual posing as a fire inspector handing out a flyer offering inspection services for $25.
Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady said the business owner immediately contacted fire officials, who launched an investigation into the incident.
"We would never issue flyers" for discounted rates, Brady said, adding that the going rate is at least $100 for day care centers.
Brady said officials believe the incident was isolated but urge residents and business owners to come forward with information regarding the incident.
Anyone with additional information can call the county's fire prevention line at 301-583-1830.
