Kathy Hollowell-Makle was honored in November as the 2013 Teacher of the Year by the D.C. Public Schools system.

Kathy Hollowell-Makle, the District of Columbia Public Schools 2013 Teacher of the Year, will be among the invited guests sitting with first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday during President Obama's State of the Union address.

Hollowell-Makle, who teaches at Abraham Simon Elementary School in Southeast, has been an educator since 1998 when she joined the nonprofit, New York-based Teach for America. She has been at Simon for four years, where she has also served on numerous committees and acted as a grade-level chair and mentor teacher.

"I realized that I loved teaching," she said last fall after winning Teacher of the Year. "Here I am some 15 years later."

Last year, more than 80 percent of her students advanced two or more reading levels.

"[Hollowell-Makle] is generous in sharing research-based best practices, and is highly respected among her colleagues as a knowledgeable, compassionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic educator," said principal Adelaide Flamer.
