Metro's long-awaited Silver Line service in Northern Virginia will officially start servicing passengers in late July, the transit agency's general manager said Monday.

"We have set the opening date for the Silver Line as Saturday, July 26," said Metro CEO Richard Sarles. "The five new Silver Line stations will open to customers at noon and the first Silver Line train will depart Wiehle-Reston East, bound for Largo Town Center, at that time."

Silver Line trains will operate between Reston and Largo at the same frequency as most of the system's other lines. Trains will run every six minutes during rush hours and every 12 minutes to 20 minutes at off-peak times.

The five new stations added to the system are McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro and Wiehle-Reston East.

The Silver Line is scheduled to be completed about 2018 with six other stations that include a station at Dulles Airport and two other stations in Loudoun County.
