D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (D) signed into law infrastructure legislation to creating a public-private partnership to bury overhead primary power lines, in an attempt to improve electric service reliability.

The law is a product of the mayor's Power Line Undergrounding Task Force, which was established after the devastating 2012 derecho and other weather events that year that taxed the overhead power lines system and caused many city residents to lose power for days.

Gray lauded the legislation, which was passed last month by the D.C. Council.

"The new law codifies the recommendations of my task force, spells out how this $1 billion infrastructure effort will be financed and will lead to the improved electric-grid reliability we need," he said. "I'm proud to say that the message was heard loud and clear, and we responded."
