‘Girls Trip’ Wows at the Box Office

The long-awaited and highly-promoted “Girls Trip,” starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish, made for lots of box-office chatter on its July 21 weekend opening.
The movie, which treks the adventures of four Black female friends attending the annual Essence Festival in New Orleans, La., took in a startling $30.4 million from 2,591 locations, making it the largest opening of any live-action comedy so far, this year.
With Girls Trip firmly in the lead, the film, “Dunkirk,” took over the No. 2 spot.
According to DiversityInc, the “Girls Trip” cast reflects what moviegoers want to see, adding that people of color bought nearly half (45 percent) of all movie tickets sold in the United States in 2015.
In addition, Variety reports that the four leads are “excellent” and “If they make you laugh you’re likely to tell your friends.”
