What the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and the fierce battle over it, teaches me is that if liberals do not move heaven and earth to wrest control of the U.S. Senate — not the House of Representatives — in the 2018 midterm elections from the Repugnikkans now in control, they can kiss their country goodbye. Goodbye. The right wing will crush the liberal society.
In this confirmation mudfest, the GOP showed that they are all of one mind — the mind of Donald J. Trump. Former President George W. Bush, whom Trump beat like a rented mule during the primary campaign, made several calls — including at least three to swing voter Sen. Susan Collins of Maine — urging senators to confirm Trump’s choice, Kavanaugh.
Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, was ridiculed, mocked and shamed from seeking re-election by The Donald, yet he capitulated and voted to confirm.
Flake guaranteed the Republican victory when he insisted on the sham FBI investigation and the one-week delay, which gave the nominee the cover of “innocence” when it reported no corroboration for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s charge that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her 36 years ago.
A victory for the presumption of innocence, our core value has been confirmed! But the decision to elevate this beer-loving individual named “Brett” to be just the 114th justice in the country’s 242-year history is not about guilt or innocence beyond a reasonable doubt, this is whether or not this guy deserves that singular honor! On that basis, no, he does not. There are literally hundreds of White guys who are Brett’s age, who were Eagle Scouts and not drunken louts, who would bring no shame to the court.
Both Bush and Flake show themselves to have no self-respect. Did Trump go to them on bended knee, pleading for their support? Not!
What this means is that Republicans have shown themselves to be absolutely shameless in pursuit of their win-or-lose, extremist, racist, xenophobic, ideological ambitions, and now they see their goals in sight and they are determined to get there.
If liberals manage to drive the GOP out of control of the Senate this Nov. 6, it means that Trump will not be able to get another Supreme Court justice confirmed, unless he nominates someone like Judge Merrick Garland, who was nominated by President Barack Obama to sit on the court but was denied even a hearing by the Senate GOP majority for an entire year. If the GOP maintains control of the Senate, there will be no containing Trump, or them. There is no surrender in them. Don’t look for it.
The xenophobes must be firmly defeated — even at the cost of Herculean efforts — or else they will prevail. Liberals must win by a knockout, otherwise the right will win any and all close decisions. Trump himself got 3 million fewer votes than did Hillary Clinton in 2016, yet he became president.
They already have an apparatus in place to suppress voter turnout, making it harder for Black folks, Latinos and the poor to get to the polls. If there’s a dirty trick that can be pulled, they will pull it. If there’s a technicality to dispute, they’ll dispute it. They are relentless and will never surrender.
Aside from Trump’s egomaniacal hunger for winning, the Kavanaugh victory is important because of Kavanaugh’s everlasting loyalty to the right wing, especially to the Federalist Society which vetted the appointees list Trump released during the campaign. In his angry, venomous attack on the left during his second Judiciary Committee appearance, Kavanaugh displayed his personal contempt for liberals, even daring to ask a female senator about her drinking habits when she questioned him about his.
From now until kingdom come, Brett Kavanaugh will be a devoted, born-again, right-wing hack, with the taint of sexual abuse and wild teenage drinking all around him, even as he dons yet another judicial robe.
If the left is able to derail the Trump train in November, however, they may be able to forestall the completion of the impending Trump coup d’état — the Nazification of America — at least until 2020 when The Donald’s own name will once again be on the ballot. If not? Well…
