The 2018 Mentor Match at Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) at Frederick Douglass High School recently paired 60 freshmen with industry professionals to embark on their early college journey.
Now in its second year, P-TECH allows students to earn their high school diploma, college credits up to an Associate degree and relevant work experience at no cost.
Industry pathways include Health Information Management and Hospitality Services Management and include paid internships, mentoring and enrichment through extended day and summer bridge programs. Students begin college-level work by 10th grade for dual credit.
Applications for the 2019-20 academic term will be accepted through Dec. 14.
Foundation Scholarships
PGCPS is gearing up to support the Excellence in Education Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization that each year, awards hundreds of thousands in scholarship dollars to deserving students.
Last year, more than 70 students received more than $300,000 scholarships for leadership, community service, career and technical education and more.
The foundation expects to award $125,000 in scholarships next spring, nearing $1 million in scholarships awarded since 2012.
Every coin counts and Giving Tuesday, on Nov. 27, is a great time to support the foundation.
Scholar of the Week
Tamara Bethea, a senior honors and dual enrollment student at Dr. Henry A. Wise High School, has been named a PGCPS Scholar of the Week.
Tamara has earned top scores in her class on both the Maryland High School Assessment and AP Language exam and received perfect grades in geometry each quarter of her high school career. She’s also a member of the mock trial team and has been named “Star Lawyer” 10 times.
In addition to academic honors and participation, Tamara is a member of the Golden Elite Band Dance Group, Drama Team and serves as a peer mentor. Her extracurricular activities include cooking, shopping, and playing volleyball.
A Posse scholarship semifinalist, Tamara plans to study political science, journalism or social sciences in college.
Arts Education
Thomas S. Stone Elementary School will move toward a more robust arts integration model thanks to a $3,500 grant from the National Association of Elementary School Principals and Crayola.
The school will partner with the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center and ArtWorks Now to expand and embed arts education throughout the curriculum.
Bus Driver Fair
PGCPS is hosting a bus driver fair from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Skyline Administrative Office in Suitland.
Interested candidates must produce a driving record less than 30 days old. Maryland drivers should provide a complete driving record, while those licensed in D.C. and Virginia should ensure their driving record goes back 10 and seven years, respectively.
