Mary Harris Jones Elementary School students dressed up this month as superheroes for a Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers spirit week celebration.
PARCC assessments in English Language Arts and Math for students in 3rd through 8th grades and high school end-of-course tests will be administered between through May 25.
Assessments for spring block schedules will be administered through June 4.
PARCC tests, which assess implementation of Common Core standards with a focus on math and ELA, also capture complex skills including critical thinking, persuasive writing, and problem-solving.
Teacher Finalist
Jennifer Palo, a 5th-grade comprehensive special education teacher, has been selected as a PGCPS’ 2018 Teacher of the Year finalist.
The Teacher of the Year will be announced May 14 during a black tie event at the Greenbelt Marriott.
The winner will receive a number of awards, recognitions and gifts from PGCPS’ sponsors and partners.
School Transfer Season
Student transfer requests for the 2018-19 school year will be accepted through May 4.
Parents and guardians who want to transfer a child from their neighborhood school may submit a transfer request to schools with available space.

Scholar of the Week
Maria Martinez, a senior at Gwynn Park High School with a 3.89 grade point average, was named PGCPS Scholar of the Week.
Maria, a dual enrollment student at both Gwynn Park and Prince George’s Community College, manages a course load that includes Advanced Placement Statistics, Human Geography, Calculus, Studio Art 20, Biology, Psychology, Literature, and Language and Composition.
During her sophomore year and junior years, she was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Association. She also played volleyball in the 11th grade.
Maria, the recipient of numerous academic scholarships, plans to attend college and major in biomedical engineering or biotechnology.
She has been accepted to Washington State University, University of New Haven, University of Pittsburgh, Old Dominion University, Marshall University, Arizona State University and Meredith College.
In her spare time, Maria enjoys writing poetry, painting and drawing.
