Allegations of sexual harassment may have gotten the best of Rep. John Conyers as the high-ranking Democrat was hospitalized Thursday morning in Detroit.
Political consultant Sam Riddle said the hospitalization was due to stress.
It coincided with an appearance on NBC’s Today show this morning by a woman whom he had settled a sexual harassment suit with in 2015.
“I just spoke with Monica Conyers on the phone and we want you to know that the congressman is resting comfortably in an area hospital. He’s doing OK, as well as he can be expected for a gentlemen that’s approaching 90 years of age,” Riddle said.
“The congressman’s health is not what it should be and a lot of that is directly attributable to this media assault,” he said.
Conyers’ staff also confirmed that he was in a hospital, but they did not reveal why or where he’s being treated.
The 88-year-old legendary congressman arrived in Detroit earlier this week, reportedly to take refuge from claims by former staffers that he sexually harassed them.
“Some of the things that he did, it was sexual harassment,” Marion Brown, one of Conyers’ accusers, said on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday.
“Violating my body, propositioning me, inviting me to hotels with the guise of discussing business, and then propositioning for sex. He just violated my body,” Brown said.
Conyers settled a sexual harassment claim with Brown two years ago.
With pressure mounting, Conyers announced this week that he would not seek re-election for a new term.
