Stacey Abrams to Hollywood: #StayAndFight in Georgia Against Abortion Ban

Stacey Abrams and other Democratic politicians want Hollywood studios to #StayAndFight in Georgia instead of boycotting the state over the recent draconian abortion ban.

Both The Walt Disney Company and WarnerMedia have both said they might boycott Georgia, if the abortion legislation survives upcoming court challenges. Disney shot “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Panther” in Georgia, which were major box office hits.

But Abrams has said she believes that boycotting the state would only hurt working-class people.

In May, Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed a “fetal heartbeat” bill that would effectively sentence women to life imprisonment and the death penalty if they chose to have an illegal abortion after six weeks.

Abrams and pro-choice activists are getting together with film industry leaders on June 11 in Los Angeles to talk aboutpotential health-care and economic consequences of the abortion ban, an Abrams spokesman told The Washington Post.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, film industry workers are also organizing and stepping up to the plate. They have formed #StayAndFightGeorgia to go against a potential boycott and are raising money for the American Civil Liberties Union’s legal challenge to the abortion law.

A boycott would hit Georgia hard — Hollywood studios have helped make filmmaking a $9.5 billion industry in the state, creating more than 90,000 jobs last year, according to a McKinsey study.

Last week, Netflix was the first major studio to announce it might have to “rethink” its business there if the restrictions take hold. Netflix has filmed “Stranger Things,” “Insatiable” and “Ozark” there.
